Here at St John's Primary School, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We deliver PSHE through a whole school approach using the Jigsaw programme. The Jigsaw programme brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. All year groups work on a puzzle unit of learning at the same time, in an age appropriate way.
SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. Through the teaching and learning of each puzzle piece, children may be supported to know and value who they are and understand how they can relate to other people in the world.
All the Jigsaw lessons have been mapped out against the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. The Jigsaw curriculum for each year group contributes to all of these values.
The whole scheme is designed with six themes (Puzzles) for six half terms. The six puzzles are:
Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy Me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing Me (including Sex and Relationships Education)
Progression of PSHE
There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence from September to July. Each year group work on the same Puzzle at the same time, which means that each year children may build on their prior knowledge as they progress through the school. We have created this progression document to show how children's learning progresses from Early Years to Year 6.
