Mrs V Sloan (Chair of Governors)

Classification: Foundation Governor

Appointed : 1 July 2017

Term ends: 30 June 2025

Business interest: none

Being Chair of Governors of St John’s Primary School is a huge privilege and one I have enjoyed since we joined DSAT. I have a passion for education and believe that it is the right of every person to receive the best possible opportunities to learn throughout their lives. Building on that, I also firmly believe that an education rooted in faith and Christian values ensures that children are able to develop as well rounded individuals with solid foundations supporting them throughout their lives.

In my professional life I have been a teacher, an Inclusion Manager, a local authority Education Adviser and ran my own education consultancy providing training and working with schools across the West Country. I gave up my business when asked to become Interim Headteacher at a failing school and moved from there to the same role in another failing school.

I am a regular worshipper at a local church and also help to lead services for a growing congregation of young families.

Reverend T Coopey (Vice Chair of Governors)

Classification: Foundation Governor

Appointed :  1 July 2017

Term ends: 30 June 2025

Business interests; none

I am a Foundation Governor at St John’s Primary School in Weymouth, a member of the school Ethos Committee and Vicar of St John’s Church. The church and school have worked in close partnership over many years and part of my role is to encourage this partnership to thrive and develop. This involves regular leading of Collective Worship, helping with occasional RE lessons and welcoming the school community into the church at key points of the year. I also have the vantage point of being a parent of 4 children, all of whom have attended or currently attend St Johns.

Mrs J Brackenridge

Classification: Foundation Governor

Appointed : 1 July 2017

Term ends: 30 June 2025

Business interests: none

I was brought up in Weymouth and have been back “home” since 1997. I am married to Iain and we have two sons, who are both former St John’s pupils. We think St John’s is a great school and particularly love the Christian ethos and family atmosphere. I have been a foundation governor since 2013. As a Christian and a parent, I felt that joining the governing body was a positive way to get involved in supporting the school.

I also work almost full-time at a local manufacturing company (ASM Assembly Systems) and am a member of St Aldhelm’s Church.

Mr Paul Steeples

Classification: Foundation Governor

Appointed : 10 August 2021

Term ends:   9 August  2025

Business interests: none

I have worked in various manufacturing companies in the local area and have held various management roles within those companies. As part of those roles, I have travelled extensively to manufacturing plants around the world. I was also Health & Safety Manager of a number of manufacturing plants across the UK and until retirement was a full member of The International Institute of Risk & Safety.

Mrs Nava Young

Classification: Foundation Governor

Appointed : 20th October 2023

Term ends: 19th October 2027

Business interests: none

I have been a foundation governor since late 2023. I have been a governor of schools in the past, but this is the best school I have been involved with. St. John’s is a great school, and I particularly love the Christian ethos and family atmosphere. The children are so polite and lovely, and I have never met more dedicated and hard-working staff, who have such commitment to the children and school. Mrs. Aze is a great head teacher too. I was a secondary school teacher for 14 years teaching mainly Chemistry, Physics and Biology. I also briefly taught Maths, computing, and electronics.

My husband and I ran a hotel for 25 years in the Isle of Wight and came to Weymouth to retire. I love this town and feel honoured to be involved in the education sector again.

Mr Alastair Sandels

Classification: Foundation Governor

Appointed: 5th November 2024

Term ends: 4th November 2028

Business interests:

Our family has been holidaying in Weymouth since 1976. We finally moved here in 2019, when my wife retired from her role as manager of a Christian charity owned, East Shallowford Farm, on Dartmoor, established for visits from inner city children; where we lived and worked for five years. Our children, their partners and my wife are also teachers!

I have spent most of my working life in the UK forestry industry, culminating in the Presidency of the Institute of Chartered Foresters. I remain a Non-Exec Director of a consultancy working with NGO’s, government bodies and business, focusing on our capacity to adapt to climate change.

Having joined St Aldhelm's church family, we are building new friendships and hoping to find ways we can support the local community.
